Their work inspired other musicians to experiment with different sounds and these musicians are often called the first wave of British blues-based rockers, or simply the British blues-based rockers. Inspired by American rock, they often drew upon electric instruments such as guitars and electric bass, and propulsive. The British blues-based rockers also drew upon American R&B, soul, and gospel. American bands and musicians also began touring the United Kingdom during the late 1960s. American groups such as Cream, Vanilla Fudge, The New York Dolls, The Doors, and Steppenwolf were popular in the UK during this time. From the mid- to late 1960s, the term rock music began to be used. It was popularized by Bob Dylan and the Beatles, who were credited with creating new stylistic directions for both country rock and blues rock, Dylan said the Beatles were the first to sing about themselves in the third person. In the US, they continued to adapt the rock sound to different styles such as folk rock, blues rock
