is also a possibility that the small samples we had for some fMRI paradigms limited our ability to identify gene-specific differences.

In summary, we examined the relationship between subjects’ BOLD response and their DNA methylation status in multiple brain regions and compared this relationship between subjects with autism and controls. We found a positive correlation between the strength of the gene-specific DNA methylation and BOLD response to the naturalistic picture viewing task in autism but not controls, indicating that autism is associated with an increased BOLD response to naturalistic stimuli in brain regions containing gene(s) with low methylation status. A strength of this study is that we examined the relationship between genes with methylation changes and brain regions, and examined whether this relationship was altered in a social communication disorder.
