The 30s were an era were women took liberties and borrowed clothing from men’s wardrobes, as would Yves Saint-Laurent in the 70s. But Saint-Laurent was not the only one who openly looked back on the past. Halston, Biba, and Norma Kalani would all look at the past to create slender elongated silhouettes. Norma Kalani would say in a (Sept. 2018) Vogue interview “My inspiration during [the 1970s] were the classic films of the 1930s; 1939 was my year, I was obsessed with it”. The silhouettes of Halston’s dresses bared resemblance to designs of 1930’s Claire McCardell, and Madame Grès. Chunky platform heels, as well as bib and gold snake chain necklaces, ceramic bangles and chandelier drop earrings, would be resurrected from the 30s. Wide-legged trousers made out of heavy crêpe would often look like 1930s Chanel trousers.
